This guide to the photographs at Archives: Documents, Manuscripts, & Photographs consists of descriptive narrative and folder or item level inventories. The following series of photographs are included: New Jersey Places; Newark Places; People; Photograph Albums; Subjects; Case Photographs; Ephemera; and Negative collections.
Individual series are usually organized alphabetically by town or person, although some material is organized chronologically (ephemera) and numerically (cased photographs and negatives).
The People, Places, Newark, and Subject series have oversized and double oversized segments. The segments are organized alphabetically within each segment. Therefore several series have more than one alphabetical sequence.
When using the hard copy version of this guide it is necessary to look at each segment (standard size, oversized and double oversized). Searching this guide on-line by key word searching will provide complete access to certain places, people or subjects.
There is some overlapping of photographs between series. Individual people or groups of people are not only listed in the People section, but also in the photograph albums and the cased photographs. The Newark file is separated only because of the bulk of photographs. The types of photographs that appear in the Places series also appear in the Newark series. The Subject series is made up to a large extent of copies of photographs from the Place or People series that fall under an important subject category.
The Places series photographs are alphabetized by place in the guide. Under each standard sized place name are descriptions of the types of photographs in the series. These descriptions sometimes list the entire subject content of a folder and other times there is a general summary of the photographs. The summary description can not be relied on for complete description because there are always new photographs being placed in the collection.
